Watched “The Crow” for the first time this evening on Netflix. Had never seen it before and wasn’t anticipating anything memorable.
Boy was I wrong! It’s the ultimate revenge fantasy starring the late Brandon Lee as our hapless masked avenger seeking revenge on scumbags who murdered him and his girlfriend Shelly in an apartment they shared.
They worked for an even bigger scumbag who used the thugs to do his dirty work, destroying property for profit and evicting the tenants in brutal fashion. Lee’s character, Eric Draven, is thrown from the high rise window while his girlfriend is left at the mercy of the thugs who rape and beat her so badly she later dies in the hospital.
SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN IT
The premise of the story is our anti-hero Draven can’t rest until justice is done. In this case, justice being the aid of a soul-carrying crow (hence the title) who takes Draven from the grave (literally crawling from it) on a tour to find and enact revenge on the perpetrators.
The film is very dark, in both mood and backdrop. It rains most of the time and Draven appears at night as a ghostly mime. His superpower is that he’s immune to death (because he’s already dead). He’s in a sense the walking dead, but carrying the baggage of emotional turmoil from his previous trauma that took the life of his beloved.
The side story involves a police sergeant (demoted) who becomes a valued ally to Draven and a young girl who seems to be the strongest link to his late girlfriend.
It’s hard not to delight in the final gun battle that ultimately rids the world of the lord of the scumbags. We hate to see our hero go, but the wispy presence of Shelly to lead him to the other side makes it a little better.
I couldn’t resist making GIFS. This was just fucking’ hilarious!
